Fun Facts About Guinea

  • Guinea is home to some of the last significant populations of the endangered West African chimpanzee. These monkeys exhibit a sophisticated and culturally transmitted behavior (like human culture) of using stones as tools to crack open nuts.
  • Guinea possesses some of the world's largest bauxite reserves, estimated at 25–30% of the global total. Bauxite is the main source of aluminum.
  • French is Guinea's only official language. But more than 24 others are spoken there, including the most common native languages of Pular (Fula), Maninka, and Susu.
  • In 1958 Guinea became the first French colony in Africa to vote for total independence. The president of Guinea at the time famously told Charles de Gaulle "We prefer poverty in liberty to riches in slavery."
  • Guinea is often called "Guinea-Conakry" to distinguish it from Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. Conakry is the capital city of Guinea.
