Fun Facts About Guyana
- The word "Guyana" means "Land of Many Waters" in an indigenous Amerindian language. This is very accurate since the country has hundreds of rivers, creeks, and over 276 waterfalls.
- The 1978 mass murder-suicide of 918 people in Jim Jones's cult in Jonestown was in Guyana. Until 9/11, it was the largest loss of American civilian life in a single incident.
- Pepperpot is the national dish of Guyana. It's a spicy Amerindian stew made with cassareep, meat, and cinnamon or cloves that can literally last for months without refrigeration.
- In 2015, ExxonMobil discovered vast oil reserves off the coast of Guyana. It turned the country into one of the world's fastest-growing economies and a potential oil giant with billions of barrels discovered so far.
- Guyana has one of the planet's last great untouched rainforests. The Guiana Shield rainforest covers about 85–90% of Guyana and is larger than England.
