Fun Facts About Haiti
- The Haitian flag was created when the leader of the independence movement famously ripped the white stripe from the French tricolor. The flag is meant to symbolize the union of Black and mixed-race people.
- The Haitian Revolution of 1791–1804 is the only successful slave revolt in history that led to the founding of a sovereign state.
- Haiti is unique as the only country where Voodoo is an officially recognized religion alongside Catholicism. Its status was cemented in 2003 when the President granted it equal legal standing for ceremonies like marriages.
- Haiti is often called the "Land of High Mountains". This is aptly descriptive, as estimates place about 70–80% of Haiti's terrain as mountainous.
- Haiti has two official languages, French and Haitian Creole. But most people speak Creole as their first language.
