  • The word "Honduras" comes from Spanish for "depths". The land is named as such after Christopher Columbus reportedly said he thanked God they escaped these depths after sailing through rough waters off the coast.
  • Honduras is often cited as the first "banana republic" in the early 20th when American fruit companies like United Fruit basically ran the country.
  • Honduras's famous "Rain of Fish" is a yearly phenomenon whereby fish supposedly rain from the sky. Scientists think waterspouts suck them up from the ocean and drop them inland.
  • The Honduran flag's five stars represent the five original members of the Federal Republic of Central America (Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica).
  • The scarlet macaw is the national bird of Honduras. It appears on everything from banknotes to police cars.
