Fun Facts About Iran
- The country known as Persia in the West was officially renamed Iran in 1935. The word "Iran" means "Land of the Aryans" in Persian.
- Despite its hot deserts, Iran is a mountainous country with world-class, high-altitude ski resorts.
- The game of polo originated in ancient Persia (modern-day Iran) over 2,000 years ago, initially as a cavalry training exercise for nobility.
- Iran's workweek traditionally runs Saturday to Wednesday (or Thursday), with Friday as the main day off as it is a holy day. Thursdays are treated as a half-day or a full-day off.
- Iranians intentionally include a small flaw in hand-woven Persian carpets, based on the belief that only God can create perfection.
