- Kyrgyzstan is sometimes called the "Switzerland of Central Asia" because roughly 90% of its land is mountainous. This includes the spectacular Tian Shan ("Heavenly Mountains") range which offers similar alpine scenery, trekking, glaciers, and rich biodiversity, including rare snow leopards.
- Kyrgyzstan is home to nearly 2,000 lakes, many of which were formed by glacier activity, adding to its reputation as a nature lover's paradise.
- The name "Kyrgyzstan" is widely believed to mean "Land of Forty Tribes," referring to the legendary hero Manas who unified these disparate groups to protect their homeland from invaders.
- Kyrgyzstan's national poem, the Epic of Manas, has over 500,000 lines and is about 20 times longer than Homer's Odyssey and Iliad combined.
- Kyrgyzstan's largest lake is also the world's second-largest high-altitude lake. It's so salty it never freezes, even in harsh winters.
