Fun Facts About Latvia
- Latvian women are among the tallest in the world, with an average height of around 5'7. Latvian men are also ranked among the tallest globally.
- Latvians enjoy "everyman's right" which allows them to forage for berries, mushrooms, and even to cut one free Christmas tree from state forests.
- Latvia is one of Europe's greenest countries. Over half its territory is covered in forests — perfect for foraging mushrooms and berries.
- The tradition of the decorated Christmas tree is strongly linked to Riga, Latvia. The first written record was in 1510 where members of a merchant guild decorated a fir tree with artificial roses, danced around it, and then burned it in the marketplace.
- A Latvian-born tailor named Jacob Davis co-invented (with Levi Strauss) the modern blue jean in the 1870s by adding copper rivets to stress points for durability.
