  • The Liberian flag mirrors the U.S. flag with its 11 red and white stripes representing the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and a blue square with a single white star symbolizing freedom.
  • Liberia is a primary habitat for the rare pygmy hippopotamus. These shy, forest-dwelling relatives of the common hippo are often called "water cows" by the locals and are found in Liberia's rainforests.
  • Liberia's economy is deeply tied to its massive rubber industry, centered around the world's largest contiguous natural rubber operation, the Firestone (now Bridgestone) plantation established in 1926.
