Fun Facts About Libya
- Over 90% of Libya is covered by the Sahara Desert, making it one of the driest and most arid countries in the world. Yet it has stunning oasis towns like Ghadames, often called the "Pearl of the Desert."
- The Great Man-Made River in Libya is one of the world's largest irrigation projects. It's a colossal engineering feat, a vast network of underground pipes (2,500 miles) bringing water from ancient Sahara aquifers to arid coastal cities for drinking and irrigation.
- Libya has an extremely low population density. There are only 10 people per square mile, making it one of the most sparsely populated nations on the planet.
- From 1977 to 2011, Libya's flag was a single-color, green. After Gaddafi's "Green Revolution" was overthrown, it changed back to the original tricolor flag (red, black, green with a star and crescent) we see today.
- Ancient Libya was a significant early Christian center. Biblical figures like Simon of Cyrene (who carried Jesus' cross) and St. Mark the Evangelist both have strong ties to ancient Libyan cities.
