Fun Facts About Maldives

  • Maldives is the world's lowest country, with an average elevation of just 5 feet above sea level. Its highest natural point is only 8 feet.
  • Maldives has unique geography: it consists of around 1,190 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls, but 99% of its territory is water. The country is really more ocean than land.
  • Many Maldivian resort islands are incredibly small. Guests can easily walk around the entire island in 10–20 minutes.
  • Traditional Maldivian homes once used coral blocks, a sign of status due to its strength and natural availability. Coral mining is now banned, of course.
  • Much of the iconic white sand on Maldivian beaches comes from parrotfish that eat coral, digest the algae, then excrete the calcium carbonate as fine, powdery sand. Some of the larger fish can produce hundreds, even thousands, of pounds per year!
