Fun Facts About Mali
- The ancient Mali city of Timbuktu was once a legendary center of learning, home to libraries holding hundreds of thousands of manuscripts on science, math, and astronomy.
- The 14th century emperor of Mali is widely considered history's richest person. He derived his immense wealth, estimated in the hundreds of billions (in today's dollars), from gold and salt. It is said he gave away so much gold on his pilgrimage to Mecca, he singlehandedly caused inflation in Egypt.
- Mali was the powerhouse of trans-Saharan trade in medieval times. This was due to controlling vast gold mines which supplied about half the world with the shiny yellow metal.
- The prime meridian (0° longitude) passes through Mali. So you can stand with one foot in the Eastern Hemisphere and one in the Western.
- Mali has one of the world's youngest populations. Its median age is around 16, with a significant portion (nearly half) under the age of 15.
