Fun Facts About Malta

  • Malta is home to some of the world's oldest freestanding structures. The Megalithic Temples, for instance, were built around 3600–2500 BC, predating both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids.
  • Malta has over 360 churches and chapels, or about 1 for every 1,000 residents. This makes the country one of the most densely churched places on Earth.
  • Malta has also one of the highest car densities in the world — there are over 400,000 vehicles for a population of about 520,000.
  • Malta residents drive on the left, a remnant of British rule from 1814 to 1964. You'll also spot red phone booths and post boxes as nods to that era.
  • Malta boasts around 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, making it one of Europe's sunniest spots. This is about twice the sun of many northern European cities.
