Fun Facts About Mexico

  • The Caesar salad was created in Tijuana, Mexico in 1924 by an Italian immigrant at his restaurant. It happened when supplies were running low on a busy holiday weekend, prompting him to improvise with romaine, eggs, olive oil, Parmesan, Worcestershire sauce, and croutons.
  • Mexico has the world's largest pyramid by volume. It is bigger than Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza, but looks smaller because it's mostly covered by earth. So it looks like a natural hill with a church on top, a camouflage that hid it for centuries.
  • Mexico City is slowly sinking at a rate of up to 12 inches per year because it was built on the bed of an ancient drained lake.
  • Popcorn originated in Mexico. Ancient civilizations like the Aztecs popped corn kernels over 9,000 years ago.
  • The Chihuahua, known as the world's smallest dog, is named after Chihuahua, Mexico where American travelers encountered the breed in the 1800s and subsequently linked them to this large Mexican state.
