Fun Facts About Montenegro

  • Montenegro's name literally means "Black Mountain." This etymology dates back to the 15th century and refers to the appearance of the dark pine forests covering parts of the country when viewed from the sea.
  • Montenegro has the largest lake in the Balkans. It is one of Europe's top bird reserves and is home to over 270 species including the rare Dalmatian pelican.
  • Montenegro is home to some of Europe's rainiest places (up to 200 inches a year) and also some of the sunniest places (over 290 days of sun a year).
  • Montenegro is famous for a unique river with a reversible flow: it flows downstream to the Adriatic Sea, but also upstream inland when sea tides are high. This creates a fascinating mix of fresh water and saltwater, making for a unique habitat for fish and birds.
  • Parts of the James Bond film Casino Royale (2006) were set in Montenegro. This boosted tourism, but ironically none of the film was actually shot there.
