  • Myanmar was called Burma until 1989 when the military junta changed the English name. This was a politically charged decision that some governments and opposition groups still resist.
  • The ancient city of Bagan once had over 10,000 Buddhist monuments built between the 9th and 13th centuries. More than 2,200 of these temples, pogodas and monasteries still stand today.
  • The cultural practice of chewing betel nut is widespread in Myanmar. It's a mild stimulant and results in red-stained smiles and streets.
  • The fishemen of Myanmar are famous for one-legged rowing, a unique technique where they stand on one leg, and wrap the other around an oar to paddle through floating gardens.
  • Myanmar is one of the few countries in the world that hasn't fully adopted the metric system. They rely instead on traditional Burmese units, mixed with US units like feet and miles.
