Fun Facts About Nauru

  • The flag of Nauru features a 12-pointed star, with each point symbolizing one of the island's original twelve indigenous tribes. It is set against a blue background with a yellow stripe representing the Equator.
  • Nauru has no official capital city. This tiny island nation (around 8 square miles) definitely has a small town feel to it.
  • Nauru was called "Pleasant Island" by early European explorers because of its appealing beautiful beaches and welcoming atmosphere.
  • Nauru was occupied by Japan during World War II. You can still find rusting concrete bunkers, tunnels, and even large artillery pieces found along the coastline and in the interior of the country.
  • Nauru's massive phosphate deposits (which once made it one of the richest countries per capita in the world) came from ancient bird droppings that built up over thousands of years.
