  • Dutch farmers developed the orange carrot in the 17th century through selective breeding for sweeter, less bitter roots. Folklore has it that this was to honor the House of Orange, the royal family at the time.
  • On average, the Dutch consume the most licorice per person in the world — about 4 pounds annually.
