Fun Facts About Nicaragua

  • Most streets in Nicaraguan cities, especially in its capital Managua, don't have names. They use a landmark-based address system, with directions like "two blocks south and one block east from the church."
  • In 1856, the American adventurer William Walker briefly declared himself President of Nicaragua and made English the official language.
  • Before the Panama Canal was even a thought, there were plans for an interoceanic canal through Nicaragua. It received serious consideration in the U.S. Senate in the 19th century.
  • Nicaragua has the nickname "Land of Lakes and Volcanoes" because of its numerous lakes, lagoons, and a chain of about 50 volcanoes, with several still active.
  • The thrilling adventure sport of volcano boarding was invented in Nicaragua. It involves hiking up a volcano carrying a custom-made wooden board with metal bottom, and then sliding down the steep, ash-covered slopes at speeds that can reach up to 60 mph.
