  • The landlocked country of Niger is named after the Niger River. But ironically, only a small portion of the river actually flows through it. The Niger River originates in Guinea and empties in Nigeria.
  • Niger is nicknamed the "Frying Pan of the World" due to its extreme heat. Its average temperatures often exceed 100°F in the hottest months.
  • Niger boasts the world's tallest mud-brick structure — a giant Mosque with a stunning minaret standing over 88 feet tall.
  • Niger has incredible, massive Neolithic carvings from 7,000–10,000 years ago showing life-sized giraffes in the Sahara. The country is also home to a dinosaur species named after it. The Nigersaurus was a 30-foot-long herbivore with over 500 teeth.
  • Niger celebrates its Independence Day with a national tradition known as the "Tree Festival". Held since 1975, the event involves mass tree-planting activities to combat desertification.
