Fun Facts About North Korea

  • North Korea has the world's largest stadium by capacity. Originally built for 150,000 people in the late-1980s, today it seats around 114,000 because of renovations
  • Up until about 2024, North Korea exclusively used its own calendar which started counting years from the birth of the country's founder in 1912. So that made the year 89 in North Korea while the rest of the world rang in the New Millennium in 2000.
  • Since North and South Korea never officially declared peace but only a ceasefire in 1953, the two countries are technically still at war.
  • To promote uniformity and to counter Western influence, citizens of North Korea must choose from a list of state-approved hairstyles. Currently there are about 28 styles to choose from, with slightly more for men than women.
  • The capital city of North Korea famously has almost no automated traffic lights. Traffic is instead directed by hand by uniformed female officers, often in highly choreographed movements.
