- The adventurer Richard Halliburton paid 36 cents to swim through the Panama Canal in 1928. This was the lowest recorded toll ever paid.
- Panama has more than 10,000 plant species. Its national flower is the rare white orchid known as the Flower of the Holy Spirit.
