Fun Facts About Peru
- Peru is considered the world's potato cradle. It's home to over 4,000 native varieties of potatoes, in colors ranging from purple and pink, to blue and yellow. Spuds have been cultivated for millenia by the Incas and are central to Peruvian identity and cuisine.
- Around 75% of the world's alpacas live in the high Andes of Peru, providing wool that's softer and warmer than sheep's wool.
- The Amazon River, the world's longest, has its source in the Peruvian Andes. The country also has a "boiling river" — a unique geothermal marvel where its flowing water heats to near-boiling temperatures.
- Traditional Peruvian ponchos, often made from alpaca wool, require immense skill and take up to six months to weave by hand. They are designed to last a lifetime.
- The ancient Incas built Machu Picchu and other structures without wheels or mortar. The massive stones were precisely shaped to interlock together perfectly.
