- Until Portuguese explorers arrived in the late 1400s, the tiny island nation of Sao Tome and Principe was completely uninhabited.
- A 1919 solar eclipse expedition to the island of Principe successfully measured the gravitational bending of starlight, providing key evidence for Einstein's General Relativity.
- The flag of Sao Tome and Principe has two black stars against a yellow band. The stars represent the two main islands, while the yellow band is a nod to cocoa — one of their historic cash crops.
- As the equator runs right through the country, you can stand with one foot in each hemisphere.
- The Great Dog Peak in Sao Tome and Principe looks like a giant needle rising straight out of the jungle. Its made of hardened magma and is famous for its near-vertical walls, slippery moss, and being one of Africa's most difficult climbs.
