Fun Facts About Serbia
- The English word "vampire" comes from the Serbian "vampir." One of the earliest documented vampire cases occured in 1725 and involved a Serbian peasant. This foundational, documented event predates Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897) by well over a century and a half.
- Serbia is famous for the world's most expensive cheese, Pule. It is made from rare donkey milk and costs over $600/lb due to the labor-intensive milking process.
- Around 18 Roman Emperors, more than from any province outside Italy, hailed from the territory of modern-day Serbia. This includes major figures like Constantine the Great and Galerius.
- Serbian is the only European language that officially and actively uses both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets interchangeably.
- Serbia is nicknamed the "Raspberry Capital of the World" because it produces a massive share of the world's raspberries — in peak years, exceeding over 90% of total world production.
