- Somalia is home to the world's largest camel population. Known as "ships of the desert", these beasts are cultural superstars, providing milk, meat, transport, and even acting as status symbols.
- Somalia is a major global source of frankincense, the aromatic resin famous from biblical stories (think gifts to baby Jesus). It's been traded from here for millennia.
- Somalia's coastline on a map vaguely resembles the shape of lucky number 7. But don't plan on making any bets, because the country strictly adheres to Islamic law which makes all gambling illegal.
- Somalia has the longest coastline on mainland Africa, stretching over 2,000 miles along the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden.
- Driven by a collapsed formal banking system which created a largely cashless society, Somalia was an early adopter of mobile money transfers — long before many other countries.
