- There is a widespread South Korean urban legend called "fan death" that says sleeping with an electric fan on in a closed room can be fatal because it steals oxygen or creates fatal cold. That's why fans sold in the country have built-in timers.
- In South Korea writing someone's name in red ink is seen as wishing death or bad luck. That's because historically red ink was used for the deceased on registers and death notices.
- South Koreans generally don't tip in restaurants because excellent service is just expected as part of the job.
- The canned meat product Spam is a beloved gift item in South Korea, especially during holidays, and features prominently in popular dishes. It is a nostalgic throwback to the Korean War era when U.S. soldiers introduced it.
- Tourists traveling in South Korea will notice buildings often skip the 4th floor. That's because the number 4 is considered unlucky because it sounds identical to their word for death.
