Fun Facts About Spain
- Spain is the Guinness World Record holder for having the oldest continuously operating restaurant. First opening in 1725, its iconic wood-fired oven has been in use for centuries.
- Instead of a tooth fairy, Spanish kids get visits from a little mouse who swaps lost teeth, placed under pillows or in water glasses, for coins or small gifts.
- There's a town in Spain that hosts the world's largest food fight. Called La Tomatina, thousands of participants hurl over 150,000 overripe tomatoes at each other for an hour. This occurs every last Wednesday in August.
- There's another town in Spain that holds a Baby Jumping Festival. Every June, men dress like devils in bright red and yellow and leap over rows of real babies. It has been happening every year since 1620 and is meant to "cleanse" them of original sin.
- Spaniards traditionally have two surnames: the first from the father and the second from the mother. The system thus perserves both lineages, but people can choose the order or assign them differently.
