- There's a famous temple in Sri Lanka that is said to house one of Buddha's canine teeth. The Sacred Tooth Relic is a major pilgrimage site and symbol of sovereignty.
- If you travel through Sri Lanka, don't get confused: many restaurants and eateries are called "hotels" even if they don't offer rooms. It's just a common term for affordable eateries serving local food.
- Street food in Sri Lanka is traditionally served wrapped in old newspaper, although food safety officials have been recommending the use of more appropriate materials as of late.
- Cinnamon originally came from Sri Lanka. It's still considered some of the purest and healthiest in the world.
- Sri Lanka's iconic stilt fishermen perch on poles to fish. This unique tradition involves balancing on a crossbar tied to a seabed-planted pole and using handlines for small fish like herring. Today it's mostly staged for tourists.
