  • Tanzania has a lake so alkaline and hot that it can calcify animals that die in it. It basically turns them into eerie, stone-like preserved statues. Yet it is a vital breeding ground for millions of flamingos.
  • Tanzania is home to rare tree-climbing lions. These big cats lounge in branches to escape insects and heat. Scientists suggest this is a learned skill and not an evolutionary norm for the species.
  • There's an area in Tanzania nicknamed the "Cradle of Mankind". It is famous for a discovery of incredibly old human ancestor fossils and stone tools. The discovery was made somewhat by accident and date back over 2.1 million years.
  • The Anglo-Zanzibar War took place in Tanzania in 1896. It holds the record as the shortest war in recorded history, lasting just 38 minutes. It was sparked when Britain bombarded Zanzibar after a new sultan refused to step down.
  • The African blackwood is Tanzania's national tree. It's famous for producing some of the world's most expensive timber used to make high-end instruments like clarinets, oboes, and bagpipes.
