Fun Facts About Tonga

  • The people of Tonga are officially the heaviest people on Earth. The country consistently ranks as having the highest average body mass index (BMI) globally. Over 70% of adults classify as obese.
  • When in Tonga, you can mail a coconut as a postcard. Just write the address directly on the husk, slap on some stamps, and drop it into the mail — you'll have a nice souvenir waiting for you when you get home.
  • The number of Tongans living overseas significantly outnumber the population living in Tonga itself. The most live in the U.S., New Zealand, and Australia.
  • Lakalaka is Tonga's traditional dance. The word means "to step briskly or carefully", which certainly characterizes the precise, synchronized steps of the dance. It is often performed by groups of up to several hundred people simultaneously.
  • Tonga is nicknamed "The Friendly Islands" because Captain James Cook was greeted with overwhelming hospitality during his visits starting in 1773. They reportedly fed him so much he got quite ill.
