Fun Facts About Trinidad and Tobago
- Trinidad and Tobago invented the steelpan (or steel drum) in the 1930s and 1940s. It's an acoustic instrument born from resourceful innovation: recycled oil drums, paint pots, and biscuit tins were all originally used during times when traditional drumming was banned.
- Trinidad and Tobago is home to the world's largest brain coral. This massive, wrinkly spheroid formation measures about 10 feet high and 16 feet wide.
- The limbo dance originated as an African-influenced ritual in Trinidad and Tobago. It evolved into the challenging, super-flexible feat we know today only later. Some professionals can go under bars as low as 8.5 inches!
- In Trinidad and Tobago, the limbo dance was originally performed as a way to honor the dead. It symbolized the soul's journey, with the bar staring low and rising nightly to represent the soul's ascent to heaven.
- Goat racing is a real sport on Tobago. Barefoot jockeys will run alongside goats, guiding them with long leashes and whips on short tracks after Easter. It's a tradition dating back to the 1920s.
