- St. Nicholas, the historical figure behind Santa Claus, was born in modern-day Turkey. The real historical figure became famous for his secret gift-giving and generosity, inspiring the beloved Christmas tradition.
- Istanbul, Turkey is the only major city in the world which straddles two continents, Europe and Asia.
- Turkey hosts more hot air balloon rides per year than any other country. On any given morning, you'll likely see over 100 balloons in the sky. Sometimes up to 200.
- Turkey holds approximately 73% of the world's known boron reserves (boron is a key ingredient in laundry detergent). The country also produces more hazelnuts that the rest of the world combined (about 65–75% of global supply).
- The world's first known love poem was written on a clay tablet in Turkey some 4,000 years ago. The poem is known today as "The Love Song for Shu-Sin."
