Fun Facts About Turkmenistan
- The flag of Turkmenistan features a green field with a vertical red stripe with five traditional carpet patterns. These represent the five major Turkmen tribes. The white crescent moon and five stars symbolize Islam and the country's five provinces.
- Turkmenistan is home to the Door to Hell. This natural gas crater has been burning continuously since 1971. It's a major tourist draw, but also an environmental concern.
- Turkmenistan initially relied almost exclusively on notes for its national currency, even for very small amounts. Only recently has it introduced coins into circulation.
- The capital city of Turkmenistan holds Guinness World Records for having the most marble buildings in one city, as well as the largest indoor Ferris wheel.
- Melons are basically a national religion in Turkmenistan. Its annual Melon Day holiday leads to nationwide festivities, competitions, and symbolic gift-giving.
