Fun Facts About Uganda
- Uganda has over 1,000 recorded bird species. That represents roughly 10% of the world's total — all within an area smaller than the state of Oregon.
- Ugandans consume more bananas per capita than any other country in the world.
- Uganda is often called "The Pearl of Africa" after Winston Churchill described it that way during a visit in 1907. This was because of its stunning natural beauty, diverse landscapes, and abundant wildlife.
- In some parts of Uganda, people still traditionally greet very important guests by presenting them with a live chicken. This gesture is one of ultimate respect, but to the unprepared visitor it might cause mild panic.
- The world's longest river, the Nile, begins its epic 4,130 mile journey in Uganda. But if you start your river journey there, beware: Uganda has the world's largest population of Nile crocodiles, which are known to climb into boats for surprise visits.
