  • Some traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs are so intricate that patterns can take up to 20 hours to create. They are drawn onto the eggshell with a tiny metal pen using hot beeswax, then dipped in progressively darker dyes, revealing the layered designs when the wax is melted off.
  • Ukraine is the world's leading producer and exporter of sunflower oil. The country is responsible for about one-third of global supply.
  • Ukraine has one of the deepest metro stations in the world. It's 346 ft underground – you need to take two separate sets of escalators, and set aside a full 5 minutes, to reach the platform.
  • The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone surrounding the 1986 nuclear disaster now has one of the largest populations of wild gray wolves in Europe.
