- The flag of Uzbekistan features a white crescent and 12 stars to represent the rebirth of the nation and the months of the year (or ancient zodiac signs). The stripes are symbolic for water, peace, nature, and life force.
- All five of Uzbekistan's neighbors are also "stan" countries: Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.
- In Uzbekistan, handshakes typically occur only between men. Women are greeted with slight bows with the right hand over the heart.
- The Aral Sea in Uzbekistan was once the fourth-largest lake in the world. It has dramatically shrunk due to Soviet-era irrigation. Former fishing towns have been turned into desert "ship graveyards."
- Uzbekistan cultivates over 160 varieties of melons and holds annual festivals to celebrate the harvest.
