Fun Facts About Vanuatu

  • The national dish of Vanuatu is called lap-lap. It's a unique pudding-like casserole of grated taro, yam, or breadfruit, mixed with coconut cream and chicken, pork, or fish, then wrapped in banana leaves and traditionally cooked in a hot underground oven.
  • Vanuatu is the home of the original bungee jumping. It developed from an ancient ritual on Pentecost Island where men would jump from towering wooden structures with only vines tied to their ankles. This was to ensure a good yam harvest.
  • The famous WWII wreck of the SS President Coolidge is off Vanuatu and has become one of the world's top dive sites. You can see intact chandeliers, cannons, jeeps and even a swimming pool when diving down.
  • Vanuatu is consistenly ranked as the world's most naturally hazardous country in the world because of its frequent cyclones, earthquakes, and volcanoes — all due to its location on the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire.
  • Vanuatu has the highest linguistic diversity per capita on Earth. There are roughly 138 indigenous Oceanic languages spoken by a population of around 300,000.
