  • Yemen is where mocha coffee got its name. The ancient port of Mocha once held a 200-year monopoly on the coffee trade, exporting beans that inspired the chocolatey flavor we know today.
  • Yemen maintained its coffee monopoly by boiling or roasting beans to prevent germination. The monopoly was finally broken in the 17th century when an Indian smuggled seven fertile seeds out and planted them, thus beginning coffee's spread across Asia and the world.
  • Yemen's name derives from the Arabic root for "Happiness". It reflects the country's historically warm hospitality and vibrant culture.
  • Yemen produces some of the world's most prized honey. It's harvested from wild bees in remote mountains and said to have potent antibacterial and antioxidant health benefits.
  • By tradition, Yemeni men often carry a curved dagger tucked into their belts. The handle's material shows social status, and it's said to prevent fights.
