Fun Facts About Indian Tribes

  • The Blackfeet were among the first Plains tribes to master horse culture, acquiring horses (originally called "elk dogs") around 1730.
  • The Iroquois tribe, called "People of the Longhouse," formed a powerful nation confederacy within a matrilineal society where Clan Mothers held veto power over war, chose male leaders, and managed the land. They are considered one of the oldest participatory democracies in the world.
  • The Mohawk are known as the "Keepers of the Eastern Door" of the Iroquois Confederacy for their role as protectors against eastern invasions, particularly from the Hudson River and Atlantic coast.
  • The Mohican were known as "the people of the waters that are never still." Their homeland was along the Hudson River, centering around present-day Albany, New York and not Wisconsin as often assumed.
  • The Pima tribe are the descendants of people who developed advanced irrigation canals, some of which influenced modern Arizona waterways. They were skilled farmers and a peaceful people who provided crucial support to travelers during the 1849 Gold Rush.
  • The Wichita people historically built villages made up of distinctive grass-covered houses shaped like domes. The city of Wichita, Kansas, is named directly after them.
