Fun Facts About Disney Cats
- Julius the Cat was Walt Disney's first major recurring animated character. Debuting in 1922, he predated both Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Mickey Mouse by several years.
- One of Julius the Cat's classic gags involved a "nine lives" bit, where his spirit would leave his body multiple times after accidents. This became a favorite trope in Walt Disney animation.
- Walt Disney's personal favorite character was Figaro from Pinocchio (1940), so much so that after the film, Figaro was repurposed as Minnie Mouse's beloved pet cat in many subsequent cartoon shorts.
- The Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland (1951) is famous for his ability to disappear at will leaving only his famous grin behind — a direct nod to the original book's "grinning like a Cheshire cat" phrase.
- Lucifer is the plump, evil cat from Cinderella (1950). He's named after the Devil himself, which is fitting for the only animal in the movie who constantly schemes against Cinderella and tries to catch her mouse friends.
- Oliver from Oliver & Company (1988) is a unique, street-smart orange tabby kitten who joins a gang of stray dogs in New York City. He stands out from Disney's other cats for his modern, urban vibe.
