Fun Facts About Dogs
- Just like a human fingerprint, a dog's nose print is completely unique. The pattern of ridges and grooves can, and has been, used for official identification.
- Greyhounds can outlast cheetahs in a long-distance race. While the cheetah is the undisputed fastest land animal in the world, capable of explosive bursts of speed up to 70 mph, they tire after about 30 seconds. The Greyhound, however, can maintain the quick pace of 35 mph up to seven miles, making them superior distance runners.
- Dalmatians are born with completely white coats. Their iconic black spots only emerge and darken later, over the course of a few weeks.
- Dogs curl into a ball to sleep as an ancient instinct to protect their vital organs from their wolf ancestors. It also helps conserve body heat.
- Dogs have three eyelids — the upper, the lower, and a protective, moisture-providing third membrane that sweeps across the eye to clear debris and fight infection. This third eyelid is usually hidden, but you can see it when the dog is sleepy, sick, or threatened.
