Fun Facts About Beans

  • Beans are a premier plant-based protein source. A single cup of cooked beans can provide roughly 15 grams of protein and 15 grams of fiber, plus essential minerals like iron, folate, magnesium, and antioxidants.
  • Black beans top the list for antioxidants, followed by lentils and kidney beans. These beans make them a great choice for fighting inflammation and supporting overall health.
  • Beans are among the oldest cultivated crops. Archaeological evidence shows people were eating and growing beans as far back as 7,000–10,000 years ago in places like Mexico, Peru, Thailand, China and the Middle East.
  • National Bean Day is celebrated on January 6 in the U.S. to promote the nutritional value of beans. It also marks the anniversary of the 1884 death of Gregor Mendel. The Augustinian friar famously used pea plants to establish the principles of heredity.
  • A standard can of Heinz baked beans contains 465 beans (give or take 50). This figure is often cited as a quirky statistic about this popular British staple — the Brits consume over 1.5 million cans daily.
  • Raw red kidney beans contain a toxin that causes severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. But cooking them properly destroys the toxin completely.
  • Raw green beans also contain a toxin which can cause severe gastrointestinal irritation. So nibbling straight from the garden isn't recommended without cooking first to neutralize the toxins.
  • "Beans, beans, the musical fruit, the more you eat, the more you toot. The more you toot, the better you feel, so eat your beans with every meal." (Sorry, we couldn't resist)
