Fun Facts About Bakery Items

  • The earliest evidence of bread-making dates back over 14,000 years. The charred breadcrumbs found in Jordan proves humans were baking flatbreads from wild cereals and tubers long ago, making it one of the oldest prepared foods in human history.
  • The story about how chocolate chip cookies were invented by accident in the 1930s might not be true. The inventor, a trained chef in Massaschusetts, later claimed she knew what she was doing. [editor's note: We're OK either way, just as long as you pass over a double chocolate chunk!]
  • Fortune cookies are not actually Chinese. There were invented in San Francisco, California in the early 20th century, likely inspired from Japanese crackers.
  • Danish pastries originated in Austria, not Denmark, during a 1850s strike of Danish bakers. The strike forced bakery owners to hire Austrian workers who brought the new recipes and techniques.
  • The Austrians also invented croissants — the quintessential symbol of French baking. French bakers adapted the recipe used by a Viennese bakery which opened up in Paris in the 1930s.
