Fun Facts About Indian Tribes
- The Biloxi people originally inhabited the Gulf Coast near present-day Biloxi, Mississippi. Their language has been extinct since the 1930s, following the death of the last known speaker.
- The Cheyenne were originally a sedentary agricultural people in the Great Lakes region. They later transformed into a powerful, organized warrior society on the Great Plains.
- Dakota women were responsible for the home, which included building it. They were such proficient builders that they could set up, or take down, an entire village within an hour.
- The Erie people were nicknamed the "Cat Nation" by early French explorers because the mountain lion was an important symbol to them. Lake Erie bears their name today, as well as cities in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York.
- The Hopi are famous for their kachina dolls, which teach children about spiritual, ancestral and natural forces.
- Pawnee villages in Nebraska were meticulously arranged to mirror star constellations, reflecting their deep astronomical knowledge.
- The Yazoo lived near the river in Mississippi which now carries their name.
