Fun Facts About Superheroines

  • The first female superhero to appear in comic books was Woman in Red who debuted in 1939, two years before the iconic Wonder Woman. She was a costumed crime-fighter whose secret identity was policewoman Peggy Allen. Other early female characters include Fantomah, Lady Ghost (1940), The Invisible Scarlet O'Neil (1940), and Lady Luck (1940).
  • Before becoming an X-Man, Storm was a street thief in Africa and briefly worshipped as a goddess by villagers due to her weather-controlling powers. She has a weakness, though. She has claustrophobia, can't stand tight spaces.
  • Supergirl supposedly has the same powers (strength, flight, heat vision) as her cousin Superman who was raised on Earth by human foster parents. But some fans argue she is stronger for growing up on Krypton because her powers are not inherently suppressed by human-like empathy.
  • Mystique is a master shapeshifter, able to perfectly mimic anyone by copying their looks, voice, behavior — right down to their fingerprints. She's impersonated almost everyone, including her own teammates like Jean Grey, Storm, and Rogue.
  • The superpower of Medusa, the inhuman queen from Marvel, is her prehensile hair. She uses it to lift massive objects, whip her enemies, pick locks, cushion crash landings, and swing, climb or create makeshift bridges for herself.
  • Elektra first appeared in 1981. She's a master assassin who was resurrected after death (via a mystical hand ritual). In a quirky twist, she once "killed" the darker parts of her personality in a psychic duel to become more balanced.
  • Luck is a superpower for Marvel character Domino. She's a skilled mercenary with the power to manipulate probability in her favor, making unlikely events happen.
  • Batgirl's debut was partly engineered to boost female viewership of the 1960s Batman TV show. She started as a librarian who stumbled into crime-fighting at a costume ball and ended up keeping the gig.
