Fun Facts About Indian Tribes
- Cree is one of the most widely spoken Indigenous languages in North America. There are an estimated 90,000 speakers in Canada.
- The Delaware people are also known as the Lenape, meaning "original people." They were often called Delaware by Europeans after the river named for Lord De La Warr. Today they are mainly located in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Ontario.
- The Kiowa developed detailed pictorial calendars known as "winter counts." These calendars, painted on buffalo hides, recorded tribal history from the first snowfall to the next.
- Paiute tribes adapted to desert life in the Great Basin by using a wide variety of wild plant foods, including pinon nuts, ricegrass, wild rye and chia seeds, as well as wild tubers and berries.
- The Suma lived in northern Chihuahua, Mexico, and in parts of Texas and New Mexico. They were primarily hunter-gatherers, but also lived in or near Spanish missions.
- The Wanapum (or "river people") traditionally lived along the Columbia River in Washington and relied heavily on salmon fishing.
